D’Arcy Carden has been nominated for the “Distinguished Performance Award” at the 2023 Drama League Awards for her first role on Broadway, The Thanksgiving Play! The play is also nominated for the “Outstanding Revival of a Play” award. The awards will be handed out at a ceremony in New York City on May 19, 2023.

D’Arcy Carden is one of the most versatile and charismatic actors working today. While primarily known for her work in comedy, she’s also been known to flex her dramatic chops on shows like HBO’s Barry and Amazon Prime Video’s A League of Their Own. But perhaps her biggest signature role to date was Janet, a programmed guide and knowledge bank on the NBC fantasy comedy The Good Place. Throughout its four-season run from 2016-2020, D’Arcy was able to play multiple iterations of the character flexing the type of range most actors can only dream of. While promoting her work with Citizen Watch America’s CZ Smart smartwatch, the actress spoke with Bleeding Cool about her time on the series, the camaraderie on set, and trying to meet expectations.

How ‘The Good Place’ Brought the Best Out of D’Arcy Carden
The series follows Eleanor Shellstrop (Kristen Bell), who goes to the afterlife known as “The Good Place,” a selective Heaven-like utopia run by architect Michael (Ted Danson). Not everything is as it seems like Eleanor might have been sent there by mistake, and she tries to hide her immoral improprieties. The series also starred William Jackson Harper, Jameela Jamil, and Manny Jacinto. “I feel unbelievably lucky that I got to work on that show,” Carden said. “Mike Schur, who created the show, is a literal genius and one of the nicest people I’ve ever worked with. He’s the type of boss who surrounds himself with people he trusts. There’s this cool sort of comfort that everybody had on that set. Nobody was trying to get ahead or be the best or prove themselves. It was like everybody was just a team and everybody was there to make each other look great and do their best work. It felt easy, comfortable, and getting to…the things the writers let me do on that show, I still can’t quite comprehend [laughs].”

Carden appreciated what they let Janet get away with on the show. “I still can’t believe some of the things they let me do, and that was among those same lines,” she said. “It was like he [series creator Michael Schur] wanted people to shine, not only from the actors, but also every inch of that set, including the costume, writing, props, and everything. Oh, my gosh! The props! It was a great life lesson in that you can do something special, great, enjoyable, and lovely by surrounding yourself with people you love.”

With each season, Carden pushed herself to improve. “The most challenging thing about that show was me wanting to live up to their expectations like the writers and Mike Schur were,” she said. “I’m still obsessed, and I still think those are some of the smartest people I’ve ever met in my life. They would give me these gems in the scripts, and all I would think about is how I would put the pressure on myself to deliver. It wasn’t them saying, ‘You better deliver.’ It was me saying, ‘I want to please them.’ I was putting the pressure on myself, but it was that I really loved working on that show so much.”

One of the biggest Janet moments that sticks out comes from “Chapter 7: The Eternal Shriek” when Chidi Anagonye (Harper) and Eleanor are offered switches to kill Janet beachside, which she freely offers. The caveat is that Janet will act in self-preservation mode in a convincing fashion. “Reading that script. I remember being like, ‘This show is very special. This is weird, you know?'” Carden said. The Good Place is currently available to stream on Netflix.

A League of Their Own is rounding third and heading for home.

Prime Video has formally renewed the series adaptation for a second and final season, which is officially being billed as a “four-episode limited series.” The news confirms THR‘s report in March that A League of Their Own would indeed conclude with a very short Season 2.

“Making this show and seeing the impact it has had in the world has been an incredible joy,” co-creators Will Graham and Abbi Jacobson said in a statement. “While obviously we were hoping for 11 seasons, we’re grateful to be able to continue to tell the story of these characters and this world.”

“We’re deeply proud of the work that Abbi, Will, the cast and crew have done reimagining A League of Their Own which has produced an incredibly loyal fanbase as well as achieved numerous, well-deserved recognitions and accolades,” added Vernon Sanders, head of television at Amazon and MGM Studios. “After hearing what Abbi, Will and the writing team have planned for the new story within this wonderful series, we are excited for our fans to see what comes next.”

Amazon’s queer take on Penny Marshall’s beloved A League of Their Own will get one last at-bat.

The retail giant/streamer, following months of negotiations, has handed out a second and final season renewal for the series from showrunners Will Graham and Abbi Jacobson. The Sony Pictures Television-produced show will conclude with a four-episode final season. The news follows months of renegotiations with Sony to lower the show’s licensing fee, and the cast had to sign new deals, given the order is for half the episodes that were featured in season one, sources say.

Reps for Amazon and Sony declined to comment as deals have not yet been completed for what sources say will be billed as a “limited series.”

In the works since early 2018, Graham (Amazon’s recently launched Daisy Jones & The Six) recruited Jacobson (Broad City) for the more modern take on Marshall’s beloved 1992 feature film that starred Geena Davis, Lori Petty, Madonna, Rosie O’Donnell and Tom Hanks. Graham and Jacobson received Marshall’s blessing on their updated take before she passed away. The duo also recruited several members of the former All-American Girls Professional Baseball League to serve as advisers — including the legendary Maybelle Blair, who at age 95 came out as gay during the press tour for the show.

The series starring Jacobson, D’Arcy Carden, Chante Adams, Melanie Field and Kate Berlant builds on the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it nods to sexuality and racism that were briefly featured in Marshall’s movie. In addition to featuring stories of queer players from the league, the Amazon take also examines the plight of Black women who were not permitted to join the league and were part of another contingent of teams that traveled the country.

The eight-episode first season bowed at once in August to positive reviews; it currently boasts an impressive 94 percent rating among critics and 87 percent score with viewers on Rotten Tomatoes. The show also has earned recognition from GLAAD (outstanding new TV series), the Independent Spirit Awards (for supporting actress Gbemisola Ikumelo) and with the NAACP Image Awards (costume design). It was also honored by the Critics Choice Association, earning the women’s committee seal of female empowerment in entertainment, the National Visibility Award from the Human Rights Campaign, and the Voice and Visibility Award from the National Council of La Raza.

Sources say Graham — who has had a first-look deal with Amazon dating back to 2017 with work on Alpha House and Mozart in the Jungle — and Jacobson pushed hard for the League renewal. Producers Sony Pictures Television, which owns the rights to League, also negotiated a reduced licensing fee as Amazon sought to cut the show’s overall price tag and budget for a possible second season. Sources say a wrap-up movie was also considered for the series.

The decision to bring back League for an abbreviated final season comes as Amazon — which, like other streamers, does not release traditional viewership data — has continued to spend big on well-known IP. Amazon has already invested more than half a billion dollars on its Lord of the Rings series, The Rings of Power. The streamer spent $250 million just to secure global TV rights to the franchise. Sources also say Amazon’s recent deal to land rights to Tomb Raider was the second most the streamer has spent on rights, following LOTR. The company is plotting a TV series as well as a movie and video game. Next up, Amazon has the pricey and troubled global event series Citadel from the Russo brothers.
